Bet you never thought you could match water with wine? Think it’s a bunch of halabaju as they say in Colorado? A young white wine, a full-bodied red, a sparkling wine……… match better or worse depending on the mineral content of the water. Yessiree Bob. Mineral content in a water can be paired as perfectly with a fine wine just as a gourmet meal could. Dr. Gemma Barceló Coordinación Cientifico-Reglamentación for Aguas Font Vella y Lanjaron S.A will be leading a practical sessio:

Bodegas Pinord Winery Shines Hope for Increasing Spanish Wine Tourism

barreld tintosWinery visit number two to Bodegas Pinord in the Penedes region has restored my faith in the Spanish wine tourism industry.  I recently learned that wine tours are very uncommon  in these parts which raises the question, with a great product and high demand why is there so little interest in the process and people making vinos many are so fond of? When done right, as this tour was, learning the history and getting a glimpse of the effort that goes into a bottle of wine is what every Saturday morning cartoon yearns to be – fun AND educational. The product sells itself. Though it’s grown to be an extremely large producer (putting out over 20 varieties of wine from the Penedes region) the Tetas family remains an intricate part of production vine to bottle. Mireia Tetas (Export Manager)  gave us some history on her great grandfather, Jose Maria Tetas’s winery. Mireia’s comfort and knowledge showed that she’s from a family that’s been making wine for over 150 years….

When I think of Spain I think of great Spanish culture, beautiful woman, and of course, great wine.

California winery visit
Hit me again Mr Winery tour guide

In the states, it’s tough to find the winery that gives you a warm feeling of family tradition dedicated to wine and their consumers. It is more, trying wine after wine without great explanation or what went into preparing that certain wine. As we say a lot after a night of festivities, “It’s like bar-hopping from one to the next.” However, my visit to Torrens Moliner, TM, proved to me that there is such thing as learning while drinking alcohol, wine in this case….

Priorat for Extreme Wine Tourism

_MG_5215Loading into the car at a quarter to 7 in the morning I say to myself, “Today is going to be a great day!” – As I subscribe to the school of thought believing verbal reinforcement translates into actuality. Anyway, we load up and we’re off. We are on our way to tour two different wineries today, both located in vastly different terrain than here in the Penedes. We are going to the famous Priorat wine region, where steep slopes and dominatantly slate soil provide for quite an extreme contrast to that of the rolling hills and sandy soil of the Penedes.
