The 2026 edition of the 50 Great Sparkling Wines of the World competition has unveiled a dazzling selection of the world’s finest sparkling wines, reflecting top-tier craftsmanship and global diversity. Conducted with a blind tasting protocol — where judges were only aware of each wine’s production method, dosage and time on lees — the contest reaffirmed its commitment to impartiality and quality.
The results, in time for Christmas and the whole of 2026 confirm an extraordinary level of excellence: three wines achieved the maximum score of 99/100. Leading the pack are two standout bottles from Italian producer Freccianera Fratelli Berlucchi — Casa delle Colonne Zero Riserva 2015 and Casa delle Colonne Brut Riserva 2015 — both crafted in Franciacorta (Lombardy) using the Traditional Method with extended lees ageing of 60–100 months. Joining them is the UK’s Busi Jacobsohn Wine Estate, whose Blanc de Noir 2018 (Brut) also scored 99/100 after 30–50 months on lees.
Beyond the top trio, the ranking features other exceptional Traditional Method wines from Italy (including from La Scolca) and a remarkable high-scoring Charmat Method wine from Australia’s Sidewood Estate, demonstrating that excellence can emerge from diverse vinification traditions.
Global participation was robust: entries flowed in from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, the UK, and the USA — underlining the worldwide appeal and prestige of the competition.
“This year’s judges were faced with such a high standard of sparkling wines that reaching the 50 Great list was more competitive than ever,” said Anthony Swift, Competition Director. “These results reflect not only the creativity and dedication of winemakers from very different regions, but also the growing global recognition of sparkling-wine craftsmanship beyond traditional strongholds.” Swift added that he found it odd that no producer from France turned up for the competition.
The 2026 results reaffirm the extraordinary scope and diversity of sparkling-wines, from classic bottle-fermented Method Traditionnelle to expressive Charmat and lively Frizzante styles. For producers, sommeliers and wine lovers alike, the listings provide a curated reference of world-class sparklers, each recognized for their harmony, complexity and individuality.
