13.05 – 14. 00 Seminar: The Surprising Terroirs & Wines of Spain. Speaker Clara Antúnez
Spanish wines taste different. Spanish grape varieties give flavours that you don’t find anywhere else. The vineyards are planted on rock, on limestone, on volcanic ash, on clay, on sand, or on mixtures of all these. To fashion these raw materials into modern, exciting wines, there is a generation of young winemaker who have travelled the world and learned all there is to know about winemaking. The results are incredibly varied in style, from delicate, low-alcohol whites to the richest imaginable reds, from gentle rosés to the great sparkling wines. It will be an introduction to open your eyes to a new world of very different wines.

There’s so much more than Tempranillo in Spain. In this session, Sarah Jane introduces the new-wave fresh reds of the north-west. These are generally crisp, aromatic wines, finely textured, lighter in body and alcohol, and fit consumer demand for changing styles. She begins with floral, red-fruited Mencía, and the producers to look out for in Bierzo. From there she takes a tour of Galicia, introducing Merenzao and Caiño, among others. She finishes up with a snapshot of what’s new in Asturias and the Txakolís.

Day 2 Wednesday 10 June 2020: 13.00 a 18.30

Session 1

13.00 – 13.05 Welcome
13.05 – 14. 00 Seminar: New Wave Spanish whites. Speaker Sarah Jane Evans MW
Sarah Jane Evans uncovers the treasure trove of Spain’s white varieties. It’s time to liven up the wine list and wine fridge by stocking the new generation. Amongst the varieties undergoing a transformation in the vineyard and the winery include Xarel.lo, Garnacha Blanca, Palomino, Macabeo, Hondarrabi Zuri and Moscatel.  Spain’s Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, its mountains and high plateaus, and its islands, and its very diverse soils guarantee an alluring selection. Be sure to enjoy this tasting with a glass of Spanish white wine.
